We wake in our first B & B near Dunfermline to the delightful best-breakfast-presentation of our entire stay. Yum!
| Scotch porridge served with a berry and individual honey and cream |
| Ben looks happy with his blueberries |
Favorite haggis (from Stornoway) and black pudding rounds
paired with perfect poached eggs |
There's a real chef at work here! Who's for "finan Haddie" this morning?
(A Scotch specialty, smoked from the sea...) |
| Our amiable Bunree host and chef, Hamish |
Full and happy, we set off for Alison's Tour 2013.
| Stone privacy dykes are a bit formidable, on both sides of our none-too-wide road |
First stop in Fife County is Elie, vacation spot for the Turner family.
Chris braving a sharp breeze on the sands of Elie
(Note the even braver family in the background actually getting into the water!) |
| Alison tries hard to relive halcyon (happy) summer days of vacation from the big city of Glasgow when she was five. |
| Roger studies nature's treasures the tide has washed up on the sand. |
| Many's the sandcastle Alison and Crawford made at Elie |
| ...and daisy-chain necklace... |
| One can drive right down onto the sand! |
And now, on to Anstruther, another little fishing village on the Fife coast.
| Who's claiming the catch here?? |
"Fish bar" Cousin Sofie touted as the the best fish-n-chips in the country
Right on! |
| "Anyone for dessert?" |
Saw this quaint church yard as we drove through Crail, so we stopped to enjoy its lush beauty (no other significance).
| Church graveyard in Crail |
The signs leading us to St. Andrews noted a rare Scotch find--Scotland's Secret Bunker. Once there, we determined it was too costly and too time consuming and an obvious distraction from the real tour.
Whew! Getting back on track to St. Andrews...
| Chris looking for the cathedral |
When at St. Andrews University (which, incidentally, was also the alma mater of both Prince William and his wife, as well as of the well-known C.J., J.D. and V..C. Turner), the students used to be encouraged to bring homework down to the cathedral grounds and decorate them with their scarlet-gowned bodies. Believe me, it didn't happen every month!
| Roger gets a good view of the town |
| Spectacular shot by Ben of this grand coastal town |
Well, birdie, you could have chosen a better spot than right by the walk!
(see egg in first alcove on right) |
| First time Chris got to stand on top of a castle |
After a bit of sight seeing, we took a walk down "memory pier."
| The famous St. Andrews pier |
This is where Alison used to troop with all the other begowned students after church on Sundays, down to the end and back, and then home.
| Jokester Rog fits in |
...then a walk through "time" at St. Andrews University.
| Yay! Sunshine in time for our visit to the university quadrangle |
| Founded in 1413! A bit before Alison's time |
| Woo! Medieval seats? No--recent replacements for the old wooden benches Alison knew |
Who's for a bit of Harry Potta?
(Robes and all, though we didn't glimpse any--the students
had all gone home for the summer.) |
| (Those glass-covered boards in the alcove on the left used to house the dreaded exam results!) |
| St. Andrews University Chapel |
We had a fortunate fling in the University Chapel, in the gallery of which Alison used to sing with the Chapel Choir. Crawford & Sue got married here in November, 1961. And, just outside the medieval gate, a reminder that people died upholding the principles they believed in--
| Alison's residence hall 1963-65 |
This is where we were all eating supper in the formal dining room when the head resident was called out and returned with the announcement that caused an incredulous gasp from all: President Kennedy had been assassinated. Each residence hosted a ball annually--lots of fun.
| Catchy street name |
| Roger "tees off" at the famous links |
